Obedience
At a minimum,
take your dog to a basic obedience class. Great Pyrenees are intelligent dogs and benefit
with clear, concise directions and training. Good families offer tremendous amounts of
love and affection, but it not often easy to socialize your dog with large numbers of
other dogs.Because of their large size as an adult, it is important to train your Great
Pyrenees early. Obedience class helps the dog socialize with other dogs and will be
invaluable later if you decide to put the dog in a show ring. If you want to show the
puppy do not train your dog to sit in the class, otherwise the dog will be sitting for
bait in the show ring and you will need to untrain the "sit" command.
Remember to be firm, and always fair with your new family member. A well-trained Great
Pyrenees is a happy one, and they will repay you and your family with respect, loyalty and
love.
Selecting a puppy
When selecting a puppy it is very difficult to select from the entire litter. Try to see
each individual puppy alone to determine individual personality. There are several tests
designed to help you select a puppy suited to your needs (see Understanding Your Dog
by Dr. Michael Fox and Behavior Problems in Dogs by Wilbur E. Campbell). Ask your
breeder for assistance in selecting your puppy. Do not go on looks alone. |
